You could be one of 45 farmers and 45 agronomists to delve into nutrient management and cover cropping strategies, new research, and peer success stories by committing your enthusiasm to a series of learning opportunities.
Farming Smarter started a new program this June funded by Farm Resilience Mentorship program (FaRM), a national coalition of farmer-led organizations.
“What’s exciting for us about this program is that it encourages people to commit to a year-long learning program and really dig into what works here in southern Alberta and on their farms,” says Jamie Puchinger, Farming Smarter assistant manager and program lead. “Innovation is a collaborative process, and we hope that the participants in this program will teach us and each other as well.”
The program makes it possible for participants to attend 2023 Farming Smarter events free ending with the February 2024 conference. It also includes an online monthly drop-in talk with Dr. Gurbir Dhillon, soil scientist at Farming Smarter and free online learning courses through the FaRM learning hub.
In the spirit of collaboration, Farming Smarter executive director Ken Coles sits on the FaRM advisory body.
The Farming Green program started with an inaugural event June 22. The program hopes to find and expand sustainable ways to use cover crops in southern Alberta high value crops and manage nitrogen inputs.
“We want to connect farmers and agronomists working with these tactics and practices and facilitate them learning from each other,” Puchinger says. Adding that the program fosters sharing research and experience to build a reliable set of best management practices for southern Alberta.
“This really is a unique opportunity. We’ve never had this type of support before that offers our producers a chance to collaborate and learn together,” Puchinger says.
