Craig Walsh, a farmer from Foremost, AB, a Smart Farmer Subscriber and a past Farming Smarter Board member, knows a good deal when he sees one.
Canterra Seeds supports the 4H Southern Region auction every year at Farming Smarter’s Conference & Trade Show.
In 2019, they donated a $600 gift certificate towards the purchase of canola seed to the 4H auction. The gift card was a part of the silent auction. The auction crowd was small for 2019 and thus the bag slipped under most people’s radar.
Craig, however, discovered the diamond in the rough and decided to bid on it knowing all proceeds go to 4H Southern Region.
Walsh made his bid, bided his time and ultimately became highest bidder. Walsh then traded in the original bag of canola seed for a bag of durum seed that better suited his purposes.
“4H did a fantastic job running the auction, even though it was a small crowd. Every year I bid on something in either the silent auction or the live auction, just to support the great work they do,” Walsh said.
