Shade Wagon to the Rescue

Categories
Ken Coles had participants get right in there and look at what we’re learning in our corn trials in Cypress County.

In Medicine Hat July 6, the first line of Santana’s song Smooth just kept playing in my head, “It’s a hot one!”

It was a day to make sure we had some shade in Cypress County

Still, for the people who came out to our Cypress County Field Day the heat was secondary to the learning as they walked through the corn & mustard. They also heard Brian Palichuk of North Star Seed talks about forage crops, poly cropping and getting the right mix in the field. Rob Dunn shared the Plot to Field project by Alberta Pulse Growers.

After lunch in the shade, Mike Gretzinger took them through the precision canola plots Farming Smarter has on dryland at a farmer cooperator Laverne Gill’s site. This is also where Mike Harding led them through a primer on plant diseases and highlighted things to watch for in 2017.

Just when people started to really sag on the shade wagon, Ken Coles and Dr. Blackshaw perked them up with a little information and a demonstration of Farming Smarter’s hail simulator taking chunks out of some wheat and canola plots.

Farming Smarter hosts a field day in conjunction with Cypress County each July. Watch our events calendar for 2018.
