Bug of the Month Aug. 2017

Diamondback Moth

Dryland canola field just north west of Vauxhall 2 August 2017 (H. Carcamo, coll.)

Dr. Hector Carcamo tells us that “Diamond back moth has become the pest of the summer!” A trip just west of Vauxhall Aug. 2 produced ample evidence of this when he captured 100s of larvae in 10 sweeps.

Hector recommends this Diamondback Moth Canola Watch article if you want a good low down of the situation. In the article, they explain that this early, hot, dry season amplified the opportunities for Diamondback moth to produce. There may even be a 3rd generation this summer.
